The Alternative to Google Analytics Alerts

A GA4 custom insight will email you when conversions fall. That is genuinely useful, and for some teams it is enough. The limit is structural rather than a matter of configuration: GA4 measures what happens on your site, and the cause is usually somewhere else.

What you are actually trying to solve

An alert that says “conversions are down 40 percent” moves you from not knowing to knowing. It does not move you any closer to the fix. The next hour goes on the real question: which change caused it, and is it something we did.

Analytics is the wrong instrument for that question, not because it is badly built but because of where it sits. It is a measurement layer on your website. The causes of a conversion drop are usually upstream or downstream of the website entirely.

Where analytics alerts genuinely work

It is already there

No new tooling, no new cost. If GA4 is installed and conversions are tracked, an insight takes a few minutes to configure.

Site-side metrics

Sessions, engagement, page-level conversion rate. For anything GA4 already collects, its alerting is perfectly adequate.

A first tripwire

For a team with no monitoring at all, a GA4 insight on conversions is a real improvement over noticing next week.

Traffic-shaped problems

If the drop is a traffic collapse rather than a conversion break, GA4 shows that clearly and quickly.

Where they stop

The gap is easiest to see as a list of the four places a conversion drop usually starts, and what GA4 can see in each.

Where the drop startedGA4 seesQuarkad records
Campaign budget, status or targeting editA traffic or conversion shift, cause unknownThe edit, with its timestamp
Landing page copy, layout or form editA lower conversion rateThe DOM, content and form fingerprint changing
Tracking tag stopped firingConversions at zero, indistinguishable from a real collapseA connection that stopped reporting
Submissions never reached the CRMNothing. On-site submits look normalEach submission, and whether a record arrived

The third row is the one that wastes the most time, because a tracking break and a genuine collapse look identical in analytics.

What Quarkad does differently

Quarkad connects to the systems that change, not just the one that measures. It watches the Meta and Google Ads accounts feeding each funnel, fingerprints the landing pages, records every form submission and verifies whether a matching CRM record appeared, and raises an incident with the changes that line up against it.

Because it is watching connections as well as metrics, it can tell the difference between the numbers falling and the reporting stopping. A connection that goes quiet is its own kind of monitor, not a conversion drop to be investigated.

It is deliberately narrow. There is no session analysis, no attribution modelling, no audience reporting. Keep GA4 for all of that.

Who should use which

A GA4 insight is enough

  • You want a tripwire on one metric and nothing more.
  • You own every system in the funnel, so causes are easy to check by hand.
  • You run one site rather than a portfolio.
  • Budget is zero and it needs to stay there.

You need the cause, not the symptom

  • Ads, pages, forms and CRM are owned by different people.
  • You have chased a conversion drop that turned out to be broken tracking.
  • You need to tell a client what changed, not just that something did.
  • Leads have gone missing between the form and the CRM.

Frequently asked questions

Can Google Analytics alert me when conversions drop?
Yes. GA4 custom insights can email you when a metric moves beyond a threshold or outside its expected range. If all you need is a notification that a number changed, it is free and already installed, and it is a reasonable place to start.
Why isn't a GA4 alert enough to diagnose a conversion drop?
Because GA4 measures behaviour on your site and nothing outside it. It does not know that a campaign budget was cut, that targeting changed, that the landing page gained a required form field, or that submissions stopped reaching the CRM. It reports the symptom accurately and has no visibility into any of the usual causes.
Does Quarkad replace Google Analytics?
No. Quarkad is not an analytics platform and does not try to be. GA4 stays your source of truth for traffic, behaviour, and attribution. Quarkad sits alongside it and answers a narrower question: which change lines up with this drop.
What about GA4 anomaly detection?
It is useful and it reduces false alarms compared with a fixed threshold. It is still detection only. Anomaly detection tells you the number is unusual, not which of four systems changed to make it unusual.
Can GA4 tell me if leads reached my CRM?
Not directly. GA4 can record a form submit event on the page. Whether a matching record was actually created in HubSpot is outside its view, and that gap is one of the most common places leads disappear without any metric on the site looking wrong.

Keep going

An alert that says what changed, not just that something did.

Quarkad watches the ad platforms, the pages, the forms, and the CRM handoff, then ties the changes to the drop.
